the ultimate guide to semi-permanent hybrid brows

Updated: Sep 2

At Poise by Kelly in Okotoks, we believe confidence should be effortless, and beauty should feel like you. One of my favourite ways to help clients get there? Semi-permanent hybrid brows.
If you’ve been curious about the buzz, or just want to wake up with perfect brows every day, here’s everything you should know before taking the plunge.

What Are Hybrid Brows?

Think of hybrid brows as the best of both worlds. We combine the hair-like strokes of microblading with the soft, powdery shading of ombré brows. The result? Brows that look natural, but with just the right amount of polish and definition.

They’re perfect for anyone who loves the realistic look of microblading but wants a little extra fullness, shape, and staying power.

How Hybrid Brows Compare:

  • Microblading: Only hair strokes, best for dry to normal skin.
  • Ombre/Powder Brows: A soft, shaded makeup look.
  • Nano Brows: Done with a machine for ultra-fine strokes.
  • Hybrid/Combination Brows: A little of both—hair strokes and shading for texture and depth.

Is It a Tattoo?

Yes, technically—but it’s not what you think.

Semi-permanent brows use pigment, not ink, and are placed more superficially in the skin than traditional tattoos. The pigment is designed to fade gradually over time rather than stay forever.

The Hybrid Brow Process

When you come in for hybrid brows at Poise by Kelly, it’s never a “one-size-fits-all” service. I’ll start with a full consultation to understand your goals and assess your skin and face shape. We’ll map your brows, choose a pigment that matches your hair and skin tone, and design the perfect shape together.

Then I’ll create those delicate hair-like strokes, add in the shading, and go over everything you need to know for aftercare. Your touch-up appointment will be booked for 6–8 weeks later so we can perfect the final look once your brows have healed.

Here’s the breakdown:
  1. Thorough consultation to understand your goals and assess your skin and face shape.
  2. Brow mapping and shaping to design the best brow for your natural structure.
  3. Color matching to choose the perfect pigment for your tone and hair color.
  4. The application: We create hair-like strokes first, then add soft shading.
  5. Aftercare instructions and healing guidance to protect your results.
  6. Touch-up appointment at 6–8 weeks to perfect the look once healed.

Who’s a Good Candidate?

Hybrid brows can benefit many people, especially if:
  • You want fuller-looking brows but still love a natural look
  • You’re tired of filling in your brows every morning
  • Your brows are uneven, sparse or over-plucked

However, all skin types have different needs when it comes to brows and we will discuss:
  • You have very oily skin (shading may retain better than strokes)
  • You’re pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have certain medical conditions or are taking blood thinners
  • You’re prone to keloid scarring or have a compromised immune system

We’ll always have a conversation first if you have oily skin, certain medical conditions, or any concerns about healing. My priority is that your brows look amazing and your skin stays healthy.

Risks & Considerations

While hybrid brows are generally safe when performed by a certified and experienced artist, there are some potential risks:
  • Minor swelling, redness, or irritation
  • Scabbing and pigment loss during healing
  • Allergic reaction to pigments (rare, but possible)
Choosing a reputable artist is everything. At Poise by Kelly, we take a thorough, skin-focused approach—and we’ll always be honest if this service isn’t right for you.

Healing & Downtime

Your new brows will go through a healing phase that includes:
  • Days 1–3: Brows look bold and defined
  • Days 4–7: Scabbing and flaking may occur
  • Days 8–14: Brows may look faded or patchy—this is normal
  • Days 15–30: Pigment begins to settle, and brows soften
  • Week 6–8: Time for your touch-up appointment
You’ll need to avoid water, sweat, steam, sun exposure, and makeup on the area during the initial healing window (usually 1 week).

Aftercare Tips

Aftercare is key to good healing and long-lasting results:
  • Gently blot the area with a clean tissue for the first few hours post-procedure
  • Keep brows clean and dry—no excessive moisture or sweating
  • Avoid picking at scabs or flaking skin
  • Apply aftercare balm as recommended
  • Avoid exfoliants, acids, or active skincare near brows for at least 10–14 days
  • Use SPF daily to prevent premature fading

Full Transparency is Important & Necessary

At Poise by Kelly, we aim for full transparency. We’ll walk you through the design before anything is done—and adjustments can always be made at your touch-up appointment.

How Long Do Hybrid Brows Last?

Hybrid brows typically last 1–3 years, depending on your:
  • Skin type (oily skin fades faster)
  • Skincare routine (active ingredients can cause faster fading)
  • Sun exposure
  • Lifestyle and health
Annual touch-ups are recommended to keep the shape and pigment fresh.

The Cost of Confidence

Hybrid brows are an investment—but for many clients, it’s worth every penny. The cost generally includes:
  • A thorough consultation
  • The initial procedure
  • One touch-up appointment
  • Aftercare guidance
At Poise by Kelly, we believe in quality over quick fixes. Every brow is designed with your natural beauty and long-term skin health in mind.

Still Wondering If It’s Right for You?

If you’re ready for low-maintenance, wake-up-and-go brows that feel like you—but better— and you’re in Okotoks, hybrid brows might be the perfect choice. And if they’re not? I’ll be honest with you. At Poise by Kelly, integrity comes first.

You deserve to feel beautiful and confident in your own skin—without having to draw your brows on every morning.
